JOURNEYS AROUND THE WORLD
Between 1830 and 1930 around 40 million people left Europe for a better life in the new world. Among them were families from County Durham.

Journeys Around the World is a riotous performance about lead miners who left the area in the mid 1800s. Letters from home, newspaper reports, shipping company adverts and a drop in the price of lead prompted many to leave for new lands of opportunity. Journeys tells some of their stories from their departure to their arrival in their new lives.

ADVENTURES IN LEAD, GOLD AND COLD
A one woman show mixing photography, video and performance into a fascinating tale of exploration and extremity.

In winter 2005 artist Rachel Clarke spent two months in the freezing Klondike searching for gold. In her quest she found Klondike Wilkinson, a nineteenth century Weardale miner who survived the icy Canadian arctic and the gold rush returning as a rich man and adventurer. Discover their experiences of a strange and harsh wilderness and the people that inhabit one of the richest landscapes in the world.

STRIKE
In 1849 the lead miners of the North Pennines were timed and measured, clocked on and off, watched as they arrived, watched as they left. A group decided to strike but were quickly replaced and black listed unable to work in the mines again. Across the Atlantic ocean opportunities were plenty so off they went for a new life in America.

Strike follows the amazing journeys of the lead miners who decided to strike and leave finding themselves in a land of opportunity very different to home.
